The Gift
We are looking for artist’s to create packages that represent their current individual process in making art, their influences, and how this act connects them with the outside world. Your Gift, may be sculptural, and/or it can contain original artworks (objects, images, and messages) produced and composed by the artist. Packages may be concealed or made transparent for viewers to survey the contents (if any). Whether the package is a sculptural art object, a puzzle-like mystery box that contains hidden original artworks, the artist’s name, website, and indications/clues of what it comprises, must be affixed on its surface, along with a personal card/label signed by the artist. This label will also include the price of “the Gift” and the artist name printed.
• Signed Card/Label: signature, full name printed, brief message that may include clues to the contents of your gift, and your website address.
• More on Clues: If there are hidden contents within a package, leave subtle indications of what it contains. This could also be instructed web searches revealing or conceptually unwrapping your gift.
• Size & Scale: Your gift may range from the size of a jewelry box, to a wardrobe box, and can take on any configuration aside from a box.
• We are also accepting proposals for alternative scale and interpretation of this Gift project.

We will be approaching the idea of the gift, through both models of gift-giving. The social practice of purchase and exchange, to the metaphoric gift economy. Inspired by Lewis Hyde’s, The Gift: Creativity and the Artist in the Modern World, “A work of art is a gift, not a commodity. . . works of art exist simultaneously in two “economies”, a market economy and a gift economy. Only one of these is essential, however: a work of art can survive without the market, but where there is no gift, there is no art.”
The Gift Gallery, is an installation composed of multi-media art books and packages created by contemporary artists. Each package is a signed gift made by an individual artist, that will be for sale in the Fallen Tree Exhibitions hotel room. Many of these gifts will likely house a collection of carefully secured original artworks, either concealed by the artist’s packaging, or made transparent for viewers to survey. Other gifts may be more autonomous, in which the packages themselves are sculptural, art-objects. The artists will determine what the viewer will see, while leaving inspiring indications, and exciting clues, to the substances that comprise the gift. The mystery won’t be entirely obscure, as each package will also include an illuminating personal message from the artist. Bidders, will be encouraged to look up artists names on their phones for additional suggestions about their gift, as well as, information on the artist.

Artist’s Books, may adopt any and all forms of contemporary art, such as painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, installation and performance art(necessarily including film and video) plus all forms of "craft" which have crept into contemporary art on their own, such as textiles or fiber art, bookbinding, typography, calligraphy, and paper-making. The art books don’t necessarily have to be bound and may be designed in any way. This may also include limited edition printed books of your work, unique portfolios, presentable sketchbooks, etc.
